Gullible
Saturday 31st October 2009
We slept like logs last night after the exertions of yesterday, apart from the obligatory wake up call in what seems like the middle of the night by the puppies.
The first person to order anything in the Café this morning was a tradie working down here for a couple of weeks, he ordered his coffee with Ian and then said “bit bad about the stabbing at the show last night”, it didn’t surprise Ian because of the bad feel about the place but it was the first he had heard about it, but if memory serves him well he thinks it happened last year as well.
Kate was the first member of staff in this morning, when Ian said to her about the stabbing, she said “apparently there were six people stabbed”, one of her mates who was at the show had sent her an email letting her know.
A couple of hours later the Baker who we had seen at the show, came over and asked us if we had seen anything of the stabbings last night, apparently one of his staff had been standing next to the two people who had been stabbed.
As you can imagine, we are now confused as to how many if any did get stabbed, maybe the reason we haven’t had any more reports is because every body else got stabbed, or maybe it’s just a load of tosh, suppose we’ll have to wait until we get the local paper on Wednesday to find out.
We have relayed what is supposed to have happened, to the kids and as they recognised the aggressive behaviour at the show last night, they seem to understand why we wanted them to go with us and not with a group of mates.
It was a fairly busy day at the Café today, these last three days have totally changed the way the week was going and instead of struggling to achieve last years figures for this week, we have blitzed it.
This evening Carolyn and the kids went to the Scout Camp to help feed a load of foreign students who had come down from Perth to help tidy up the bush fire breaks at the campsite, it appears that as part of their visa which allows them into the country to be educated at university, they are required to do a certain number of hours voluntary work, each year they come down to tidy up the campsite and all it costs the Scouts is accommodation in the bunkhouse and food.
We have supplied a load of muffins for the students and a meal for the obligatory awkward student who happens to be a vegetarian, probably the only vegetarian WA.
Ian stayed at home because Carolyn wasn’t sure how late they would be staying and Ian wanted to watch the Arsenal v SCUM football match live (SCUM = spurs).
A lovely evening was had by all, Ian watched with delight, as despite the rough house tactics employed by the Scum, Arsenal stuffed them 3-0, Carolyn and the kids had a great time round the campfire eating and telling stories and got home at 11.30pm absolutely knackered.
And finally, it’s dippy Saturday staff time and this one is a classic.
Todays dippy member of staff is Max, lovely girl but says what she thinks before she thinks about what she is about to say and believes what Ian says.
Ian was making what we call over here a slurry, anywhere else it will be called a paste, but basically he was whisking up some gravy powder and water to make a slurry/paste.
Max said “that looks like chocolate”, knowing full well that Ian was making gravy.
Ian said “it tastes like it too, try it”
So she did, didn’t say anything, but did not go back for seconds.
About fifteen minutes later Ian got her again.
He said to Max “the other day I was helping Fraser with his homework, he had to find out what the word gullible means, so we went to look it up in the dictionary and it wasn’t in there”.
Max said “isn’t it, I would have thought that it would have been”.
Carolyn collapsed in a heap on the other side of the kitchen, saying I can’t believe you fell for that one Max, Max mumbled something along the lines of believing that Ian was telling the truth and Ian almost felt guilty for doing it, but decided against it.

Life on Mars
Thursday 29th October 2009
Don’t quite know what happened today really, we were mobbed in the Café today, probably our busiest day of the year so far and just to make it interesting, about 15 minutes before our afternoon member of staff was due to start and we were committed to letting other staff leave as they had worked maximum hours, the staff members mother phoned up to say that she wasn’t feeling well and wouldn’t be in.
Nothing like a bit of notice, and that was nothing like a bit of notice, fortunately Carolyn was able to come in and help with the close up.
Whether it has anything to do with extra people coming to town because the Busselton Show starts tomorrow, we don’t know, we certainly didn’t have this sort of fluctuation last year, long may it continue.
We watched the last episode of Life on Mars tonight and Ian is a bit confused, he can’t work out whether Sam was from 1973, in which case how did he know about modern police practices, or had gone back in time during his coma, in which case why? And how did he manage to get back to 1973 after presumably dying after jumping off the top of the police station?

Beach Ball
Saturday 17th October 2009
The Café was quiet today, we expected it really, Margaret River Show was on and the temperature was due to hit the 30’s for the first time this spring, so we didn’t expect to see too many people inside.
Carolyn and the kids took the puppies to the vet to get their second jabs, they were very well behaved, so were the puppies.
The puppies have doubled in weight since we got them about a month ago, they now weigh close on 10kg, so if the keep doing that for their first year, they will weigh approximately two metric tonnes each on their first birthday, now that would call for a big cake.
We went for a walk along the beach this evening and stopped off at Stilts, where the owner took another beer off line so that he could put Ians favourite on, just to stop him moaning.
In truth we wouldn’t have stopped if he hadn’t done it, so we felt obliged to have two pints rather than the one we were going to have, before going up to the Broadwater Food hall for a quick nosh and then back home for what was going to be an early night.
Instead of the early night we decided to watch the football, Arsenal v Birmingham, a bit of a walkover really, but the highlight was watching Sunderland score against Liverpool.
Now how ironic is this? A Beach Ball has been thrown onto the pitch and is bouncing around in the Liverpool goalmouth, Darren Bent, not exactly the best striker in the league, took a speculative shot that the Liverpool keeper had covered all the way.
The Football hits the Beach Ball causing the Football to change direction, leaving the goalkeeper totally helpless as the Football ended up in the net.
Outrageous you might think, the Beach Ball interfered with play and gave Sunderland an unfair advantage.
Then you watch it again in slow motion, and just as the Football is about to hit the Beach Ball you see the Liverpool Crest, Large as Life, looking straight at the camera and it is printed on the Beach Ball.
A Liverpool supporter, in his wisdom, for want of a better way of putting it, has thrown the Beach Ball onto the pitch and his team have lost the game because of it, they must have given him a right good hiding on the way home, as for Ian, he laughed himself to sleep.

Pooing and Weeing.. I can't believe we have stooped to titles like this!
Sunday 20th September 2009
We woke up at a reasonable hour this morning and went for breakfast in Dunsborough, it was just another part of Carolyns birthday celebrations, she does like to make it last as long as possible.
After breakfast we went for a walk round town and down to the waterfront, it was very windy and raining quite a bit but we seemed to be under cover whenever the rain came.
We couldn’t stay out all day because the puppies needed feeding and pooing and weeing and cleaning up after, but we did stop for an ice cream at Simmo’s before heading home.
It was cold, windy and rainy all afternoon, so after cleaning out the rabbits, dogs and cat, we sat and watched the film Storm Seekers with Darryl Hannah, she didn’t half look rough in it, her face looked all bloated like that of an alcoholic and it wasn’t the best bit of acting we’d ever seen, but that probably explains why we had never heard of it before.
The kids said that they enjoyed it, but we suspect that it was the fact that they were allowed to eat yesterday’s leftover pizza in front of the telly that really impressed them.
In the evening after the kids had gone to bed, we watched episodes of Life on Mars and Torchwood, we don’t know if we are just watching a bad batch of Torchwood episodes or whether they are normally like this, but the acting, storylines and script are so naff that it has almost become an addiction, watching them to see how bad they can really get.

Bishops Finger
Monday 7th September 2009
We semi started our new take away menu at the Café today, unfortunately we still haven’t put the final touches to the menu so not too many people knew about it, but we did sell a few portions of Fish and Chips, and everyone seemed to be suitably impressed with the Beer Batter, made using Shepherd Neame’s Bishops Finger, so nice and strong.
This evening Kristian was supposed to be at Cubs again, unfortunately it was called off again, apparently due to ill health, so we are going to try and get him in Scouts tomorrow instead.
After the kids went to bed, we watched another episode of Shameless, it’s the start of a new series and everyone is looking a lot older all of a sudden.

Second Step to the Pet Shop
Wednesday 12th August 2009
The café was very busy today, we knew it would be because apart from having one member of staff away, Rodelle and Jesse are both doing the same course at TAFE (college) and the one day they can’t miss is Wednesday, if we were back in the UK we would call it sods law, over here it’s Murphy’s law.
What we would like to know is who is Murphy? And who he upset bad enough to be blessed with such luck.
Fortunately for us, the parents of one of the Saturday girls took pity on us and let her have the day off school to help us out, it was just as well she did because we would have been lost without her.
One of the new baby bunnies opened its eyes today, little does it know it has just made its second step towards the pet shop.
At school today Marisa discovered that she is good at high jump, well, good enough to impress her school mates anyway, we think that she is probably a bit too short to be able to make a living out of it, but at least she has got her bit of glory for now.
After the kids went to bed we watched another episode of Commander and Life on Mars.

Clean and Tidy
Tuesday 11th August 2009
It was very quiet at the Café again today, but on the bright side, everything, well almost everything, is clean, tidy and up to date.
Carolyn rang Ngilgi Cave today to organise a trip for Kristians birthday on Sunday, we are going on a guided tour down to the ancient river beds which should be fun.
Fraser and Marisa went to Scouts tonight and had a good time, we just chilled out and watched an episode of both Torchwood and Commander, both of which are quite watchable, but we are getting the impression that they are padded out a bit at the expense of quality.

Another New Staff Member
Friday 7th August 2009
One of the staff has had to take some time off to visit an ill parent, so we are back where we were at the beginning of the week, we don’t know how long they will be away for and we are still advertising for a member of staff, so technically we are two down.
As luck would have it, one of the girls who works in our local Chinese has volunteered to help us out for a couple of weeks at least starting next week.
Carolyn had to go to the accountants this morning to do the quarterly books, he seems to be quite happy with the way we are going at the moment.
It was fairly quiet in the Café today, even being understaffed we were never really pushed and had time to chat.
This evening the kids went to Freaky Friday, when they arrived they were the only people there and wondered whether it was on or not, but obviously everyone was running late because when Carolyn went to pick them up there were plenty of kids there.
This evening we watched another episode of Life on Mars, we can’t work out what it is we like about it and can’t yet see where it’s heading.

Cape Fear
Thursday 6th August 2009
Our new girl Kiara started work today, she hasn’t made coffee before so needs training on that, but everything else, tell her once and it’s remembered, hopefully she likes the job.
This evening we watched the film Cape Fear that Ian had recorded, we thought that it was a fairly modern film, but this version of it wasn’t, it was one of those psycho type horror films and it was quite good, but not one for the kids, we didn’t think they did woman beating and rape all those years ago, it definitely wouldn’t have been allowed on telly back then.

Not So Super Duper Foxtel Machine
Friday 31st July 2009
Fraser was off school again today which meant that Carolyn had to stay at home, so we were busy at the Café again (sods law), she did manage to get up to date with the paperwork though, so it’s not all bad.
When Carolyn picked up Marisa and Kristian from school this afternoon, Kristian wasn’t feeling well and looks to be going down with the same thing as Fraser, he was feeling so bad that he couldn’t even face going to Freaky Friday, so Marisa had to go on her own.
This evening we watched a new episode of Torchwood that our clever little Foxtel super duper I can do everything machine had taped for us, it is obviously not that super duper, it can’t tell which episodes are the crap ones and are not worth taping.

Fraser Poorly
Thursday 30th July 2009
Fraser woke up this morning looking extremely poorly and with a chesty cough so didn’t go to school today, that meant that Carolyn couldn’t come in to work either, hence it was a busy day at the Café (sods law).
On the bright side it meant that Carolyn had no option but to stay at home, so she was able to spend the day catching up on paperwork.
In the evening we watched another episode of Life on Mars before having an early night.

Cobbler
Tuesday 28th July 2009
It was a busy day at the Café today, it was bound to be really because one of the staff announced that she felt sick just before lunchtime and went home.
On the bright side, with just Aden, Fliss and ourselves we managed to keep on top of it and nobody had to wait too long to get served.
It’s just as well that we didn’t throw out the old crockery when we got the new stuff, we used virtually every piece of crockery in the building, it took Ian and Fliss over two hours to get the place tidied up after lunchtime.
Marisa and Kristian had a couple of friends over to play this afternoon after school.
There was no scout meeting tonight, presumably the Scout leaders had enough of them over the weekend and need a rest, our kids are still knackered from the experience.
After the kids went to bed we indulged in some fish and chips, the fish was something called Cobbler and came from Mandurah apparently.
The woman cooking it had never tried it but had been told it was good so we tried it, it wasn’t the best we had eaten but then we should have realised that would be the case when we ordered two portions, after all from then on it was going to be cobblers.
We ate it while eating an episode of Shameless, which was as hilarious as normal, then had an early night.

No Cubs
Monday 27th July 2009
The Café was busy today which was good, despite all the doom and gloom of the supposed recession we are still hanging on in there even if it is hard work.
The big two were a bit tired when they went to school this morning, even Fraser didn’t want to get out of bed this morning.
Kristian didn’t go to Cubs tonight because the leader couldn’t make it.
After the kids went to bed we watched an episode of shameless and then retired for an early night,

Packing for camp
Thursday 23rd July 2009
The kids all went back to school today, they didn’t do a great deal and whatever the big two did will be soon forgotten because they are going on camp tomorrow.
After school the big two had to pack their own gear for Scout Camp, Carolyn gave them both a list of what they needed and then left them too it.
It worked out pretty well, they seem to have got everything on the list apart from toothbrush etc all packed and ready to go, Carolyn has had a quick check just in case there is anything blindingly obvious that they have forgotten and seems to be quite pleased with their efforts so far.
After the kids had gone to bed we watched an episode of Life on Mars followed by an episode of Shameless, all washed down with a nice Chinese meal.

Bright Red Sticky Liquid
Saturday 18th July 2009
The Café was dead as a Dodo today and we had loads of staff in, amazing how much cleaning you can find for people to do really, if you try.
We were so quiet that we closed the café doors at 1.30pm and looked on course to be out of there by 2.30pm, which would have been a record.
Unfortunately, in his rush to get away Ian hadn’t put a rubber seal on the Slushie machine properly and when he filled it up with liquid the seal popped off and the liquid poured all over the place.
It’s amazing how far six litres of bright red sticky liquid can go, it was all over the machine and onto the worktop.
Having made a sticky mess of the worktop it then dripped onto the shelves below, this is when we find out that these super duper really useful deep shelves tilt very slightly towards the back of the unit, so guess where the bright red sticky stuff went?
You guessed it, we now have bright red sticky walls.
The liquid also managed to get onto the next shelf down, only this one didn’t tilt backwards, if anything it tilted forwards pouring the liquid onto the floor.
There was something strange about that shelf though, the shelf was stacked high with sleeves of milkshake cups all wrapped up in plastic bags and somehow the sticky red liquid managed to get onto every plastic bag protecting every sleeve of milkshake cups, even sleeves that were out of reach of the mess on the shelf.
The problem was we had to get it all cleaned up quickly before it started to dry, this involved taking everything off the shelves and taking it into the kitchen so that we had room to clean the shelves and the floor.
That bit we did without too much bother at all, it was after we had finished cleaning the shelves and were about to put everything back that we realised that all of these sticky sleeves had made a sticky mess everywhere they had touched a surface, so we then had to clean up the sleeves and the mess they had made.
By the time all that had been done and Ian had stripped down the Slushie machine and put it back together again, making sure that all the seals were firmly in position before filling it again with bright red sticky liquid, it was 4pm and Ian wasn’t a nice person to be near.
He had gone from having a bad day trade wise, to looking forward to finishing early for a change, to having to spend an extra hour and a half at work, stressed out because of a rubber seal.
Fraser was still not 100% today so Carolyn stayed at home with the kids, they appear to have spent the day perched in front of the telly watching the Pirates of the Caribbean films, one after the other.
We had a quiet evening and after the kids had gone to bed we watched a couple of episodes of the series that we are following, Torchwood and Life on Mars.
Torchwood wasn’t bad but we’re not yet totally convinced as to how good it is, Life on Mars is one of those series that we would have liked to watch when we were back in the UK but were too busy.

The Foxtel Thingamajig
Friday 10th July 2009
The day was pretty much a rerun of yesterday really, the kids and Marisas friend who happens to be a boy, all went down to Yoganup for the morning before coming back to the Café for lunch and then going home when Carolyn finished work.
Another episode of Torchwood has appeared on our super duper Foxtel thingamajig, what a clever machine that is.
We watched this episode and it does appear to be part of a series, it wasn’t bad, but not good, but we wait in nervous anticipation for the next episode before we start slagging it off, although some if the props did look like they might have been borrowed from the early Doctor Who props department, they were a bit wobbly

Mums and Kids
Thursday 9th July 2009
This school holiday is looking like it is going to be good news for us in the Café, there are loads of tourists, admittedly the majority of them seem to be mums and kids sent away for the holiday while dad stays at home and works to pay for it, but they all count.
The only downside is, with all these stressed out mums having to deal with lively young offspring, there tends to be a lot of mess by the time they leave.
Being true professionals, we smile sweetly, tell them we can’t wait for them to come back again, reverse the bin lorry in, load it up with all the debris they have left and start again like nothing had ever happened, Bless’em.
Carolyn was working at the Café again today, so the kids and Marisas friend who happens to be a boy all went down to Yoganup Park to play, they did manage to find their way back for lunch and then Carolyn took them home when she finished at 2pm.
This evening we watched another Torchwood episode, it appears to be a one off about nasty Fairies but we have clicked on the button on Foxtel that tapes anything to do with whatever programme you are interested in, so hopefully it should record some series of Torchwood in the near future.

Hungry Tourists
Friday 3rd July 2009
Not a bad day at the Café today, the tourists are moving in but the locals have all but moved out, the good part though is that these tourists are hungrier than our locals normally are.
After work Ian tried to have a chat with one of the staff about her attitude recently, firstly she wouldn’t stop texting while he was talking to her and then when she did stop, she obviously didn’t like what was said because she just stormed out.
We haven’t got a clue if she is going to come back to work, no doubt she will contact us over the weekend.
The kids broke up for half term today and they are over the moon about it, they all brought their school reports home with them and it would appear that in their own individual ways, they are all star pupils and are either achieving or excelling in virtually every subject.
This evening the kids went to Freaky Friday, there weren’t many kids there tonight but they still had the same number of prizes, so they all came back full to the gills with Curly Wurly’s.
We worked this evening on Café stuff, watched a bit of telly until a little while after the kids went to bed and then had an early night.
We are so busy and under the pump (under pressure the aussie way) at the moment, we are getting positively boring and knackered.

[A Bit Busier
Thursday 25th June 2009
Trade picked up a little bit at the Café today, it was still mainly coffee trade but there were a lot more people around today which is promising.
This evening we watched another couple of episodes of Shameless, unfortunately the second one turned out to be a Christmas special so was longer than normal and we ended up going to bed later than we had hoped.
In case you can't tell, we are tired and can not think of anything funny to report. Hopefully normal service will resume shortly.
