and then we.....

Whistlestop tour through our week.......Monday 22nd February to Monday 1st March

Marisa was poorly on Monday as were almost all her friends...hmmm not good, I had to work so fortunately a good friend had her for the day, Tuesday still poorly so at home with Mum and couldn't go to Scouts, Wednesday still ill so another day at home. Enough already and back to school please :o) Well enough to go to the pool Friday night though!

Busy morning on Friday for Carolyn, monthly pilgrimage to see the accountant while the children enjoyed games and crash test dummies and kite flying and cooking etc etc for Jubilee Day at school, K had a friend round after school which was fun, nice chap.

Saturday night was WOMUBU a music festival held on a local estate called Broadwater Farm great music and free tickets for us which was fab. The children climbed the local travelling climbing wall and we listened to music till long after dark. Good times.

Late start on Sunday, I wonder why? trip to Bunbury as nothing better to do looking for odds and ends and stuff for Ian, another pair of sunnies to be replaced for our offspring who seem to lose or break sunnies regularly. Fish and Chips on the Marsden Waterfront which wasn't great, have had much tastier one there before.

Monday was a public holiday so like all sensible people we went to the Beach at Meelup, stopped at a coffee shop based at Ngilgi Cave on the way home to drink coffee and read the paper while various kids, not all ours, roamed around eating ice creams.

At home the children watched a film while we sat out front of the house and enjoyed a light breeze as we read till it was too dark, popped some fish in the oven and chilled out. No cubs this week due to public holiday but back again next week.

None of Ians Beer Again

Friday 16th October 2009
The Café was raging busy again today which was good, that means that we are back on track to beat this week last year.
This evening, after Carolyn had dropped the kids off at Freaky Friday, we went for a stroll to the Broadwater Beach Bar and Restaurant (Stilts), it was a warm evening after a long couple of days so we thought we’d pop out for an hour.
Lucky we were only there for an hour really, they had none of Ians favourite beer and no other weak beers, we have a habit of falling over if we drink strong ones, as we were only staying for one we had a pint of Becks.
It was quite pleasant down there sitting out in the garden listening to a quiet disco, the new owners have also put on Free Poker on a Friday night but we didn’t bother with that, we just had our pint and came home.
The kids had a great time at Freaky Friday as usual, it has been a long tiring first week back at school for them so they were a bit knackered and went to bed early, we weren’t far behind them.

All Stressed Out

Friday 9th October 2009
It was just another average day at the Café today, the weather is not as good as it has been, so we were probably helped a bit by that and the fact that there are still a lot of tourists about.
The kids still haven’t heard from their mate and expected to see him at Freaky Friday this evening, but he didn’t arrive, so he’s either gone off our kids company or is in more trouble than we thought.
We had an early night tonight, even though we haven’t been busy, working all week with Saturday staff has taken its toll and we are knackered, also we are short staffed tomorrow with virtually no experienced help and Ian is not looking forward to it.

Broken Screen

Friday 4th September 2009
It was a very busy day today at the Café, made worse by the fact that a couple of large deliveries needed to be put away and we still hadn’t finished organising the storage area.
The room dividers that we had bought, had yet to be fixed into position, so Ian had left them with a couple of boxes in front of them to stop them falling over, the staff in their enthusiasm to clear away the deliveries and reorganise the storage area didn’t take this into account and put said boxes where said boxes should have been put, if they hadn’t been doing something useful, like ensuring that the screens don’t fall over. One of the screens had other ideas and when it had made sure that there was nobody around to catch it, it fell over, deliberately fell over, breaking itself in the process and causing large amounts of steam to escape from Ians ear holes, this is not one of Ians better days.
Coles the supermarket opposite the Café had a deal on Coke cans today, just for one day we could buy them from the supermarket at about half the price we can get them from Coke direct, so we had a load of it, most of which is sitting in our hallway because we haven’t got room for it at work.
This evening the kids didn’t go to Freaky Friday, this time it was because something to do with the pool had broken which makes a change.
We are now officially in spring and it is colder than it has been all winter, it looks like we are about to get the persistent wind and rain that we didn’t get all winter as well.

He Can Watch Most Things

Friday 28th August 2009
Fraser had his sports carnival today, he doesn’t really do sport, is not even interested in watching it on telly and he will watch most things on telly.
Carolyn went along first thing in the morning to watch the first few events, but had to come into work as we were short staffed today, she did however manage to see Fraser not come last in his race.
In the evening the kids went to Freaky Friday while we worked at home.

Looking A Bit Better

Friday 21st August 2009
Carolyn was off work again today with her snotty breathing problems, the Café was busy but we are getting so used to working short staffed that apart from a couple of occasions we ticked over quite nicely.
The kids went to Freaky Friday this evening as usual while Carolyn relaxed with a book and Ian worked on the computer.
Carolyn is looking a bit better this evening and as we should be fully staffed tomorrow, she should be able to relax over the weekend and be fit for work next week.

On Target For Average

Friday 14th August 2009
It was a busy day at the Café again today which was good, it has taken us back to the point where we should at least have an average week, which is better than we could have hoped for at the beginning of the week.
The kids went to Freaky Friday tonight as usual, we spent the evening working at home.

Another New Staff Member

Friday 7th August 2009
One of the staff has had to take some time off to visit an ill parent, so we are back where we were at the beginning of the week, we don’t know how long they will be away for and we are still advertising for a member of staff, so technically we are two down.
As luck would have it, one of the girls who works in our local Chinese has volunteered to help us out for a couple of weeks at least starting next week.
Carolyn had to go to the accountants this morning to do the quarterly books, he seems to be quite happy with the way we are going at the moment.

It was fairly quiet in the Café today, even being understaffed we were never really pushed and had time to chat.
This evening the kids went to Freaky Friday, when they arrived they were the only people there and wondered whether it was on or not, but obviously everyone was running late because when Carolyn went to pick them up there were plenty of kids there.
This evening we watched another episode of Life on Mars, we can’t work out what it is we like about it and can’t yet see where it’s heading.

Not So Super Duper Foxtel Machine

Friday 31st July 2009
Fraser was off school again today which meant that Carolyn had to stay at home, so we were busy at the Café again (sods law), she did manage to get up to date with the paperwork though, so it’s not all bad.
When Carolyn picked up Marisa and Kristian from school this afternoon, Kristian wasn’t feeling well and looks to be going down with the same thing as Fraser, he was feeling so bad that he couldn’t even face going to Freaky Friday, so Marisa had to go on her own.
This evening we watched a new episode of Torchwood that our clever little Foxtel super duper I can do everything machine had taped for us, it is obviously not that super duper, it can’t tell which episodes are the crap ones and are not worth taping.

Knitting Homework

Friday 17th July 2009
Fraser is still ill and is very droopy, so Carolyn had to stay at home and look after the kids, who today seem to be the most popular people in Busselton.
All day kids were ringing up or turning up at the door asking if they could come round to play, but because we don’t have a clue as to whether Fraser is contagious or not they were all turned away.
The kids spent the day indoors watching films and playing on the Wii, accompanied by Carolyn on more than one occasion.
In the evening, Marisa and Kristian went to Freaky Friday, Fraser went to bed, Ian worked on the computer and Carolyn did (quite) a few rows of Marisa’s knitting homework.

Hungry Tourists

Friday 3rd July 2009
Not a bad day at the Café today, the tourists are moving in but the locals have all but moved out, the good part though is that these tourists are hungrier than our locals normally are.
After work Ian tried to have a chat with one of the staff about her attitude recently, firstly she wouldn’t stop texting while he was talking to her and then when she did stop, she obviously didn’t like what was said because she just stormed out.
We haven’t got a clue if she is going to come back to work, no doubt she will contact us over the weekend.
The kids broke up for half term today and they are over the moon about it, they all brought their school reports home with them and it would appear that in their own individual ways, they are all star pupils and are either achieving or excelling in virtually every subject.
This evening the kids went to Freaky Friday, there weren’t many kids there tonight but they still had the same number of prizes, so they all came back full to the gills with Curly Wurly’s.
We worked this evening on Café stuff, watched a bit of telly until a little while after the kids went to bed and then had an early night.
We are so busy and under the pump (under pressure the aussie way) at the moment, we are getting positively boring and knackered.

Great Danes For Lunch

Friday 26th June 2009
Trade was pretty much the same as yesterday at the Café, loads of people drinking coffee and not a lot else.
Rodelle was off sick today with the flu which saved us a few bob on wages, Fliss and Ian both sniffed their way through the day trying to avoid going sick.
The kids had Red Nose Dinner today at school, we couldn’t not support the cause totally could we. They had Great Danes for lunch, apparently they are large Hot Dogs as opposed to Chihuahuas, which are small ones, stands to reason.
This evening the kids went to Freaky Friday, Carolyn did some office work then read her book, Ian used up the best part of a roll of kitchen paper blowing his hooter while working on the computer.
After the kids got home and went to bed, Ian dosed himself up with as many cold remedies that he could find that were compatible and we had an early night.

Catching Up On The Gossip

Friday 19th June 2009
Another average day at the Café today, but at least it gave the girls plenty of time to catch up on what’s been happening for the last two and a half weeks while Michelle was away.
Marisa had to see the Dentist again today, he was happy with the repair and confirmed that he is going to contact the Orthodontist.
Marisas friend who happens to be a boy, went to Freaky Friday with her and the boys this evening, his mum dropped them all off at the pool, Carolyn picked them up and dropped him off home on the way back here.
While they were at Freaky Friday, we went to El Gringo for a Mexican meal, the food wasn’t as good as last time and the service was pretty dire, we think they had some new staff working tonight.
We had an early night.

A Tight Fit

Friday 12th June 2009
It was a quiet start to the day at the Café again today, but by 11am we were flying and Carolyn was late coming in for work.
The road outside the Café was closed again today so everyone was using the carpark, it took Carolyn 20 minutes to find a parking space, that was her excuse anyway.
Our builder man came round this evening to look at the door to our office/guest bedroom, it has always been a bit sticky as in a tight fit, but we thought it would cure itself.
Now that winter is here and there is dampness in the air the door has got worse, he said he will come round tomorrow morning to shave a bit off it.
Marisas friend who happens to be a boy came round after school, he got changed here and Carolyn gave him a lift with the kids to Freaky Friday.
We obviously did nothing this evening.

Conversion Kit Arrives - Late

Friday 29th May 2009
Today started very quietly at the Café, this was just as well because we had loads of orders delivered today that needed putting straight away, it was one of those times when the stock of virtually everything we sell had got low at the same time.
The Café picked up by about 10am and we were busy right the way through until about 1.30pm, then it died and the afternoon was pretty quiet.
The gas conversion kit arrived today, Carolyn picked up the fire and all the extras and brought it home ready for the gas fitter next week. Unfortunately it arrived too late for us to be able to get the gas fitter in today.
The kids all went to Freaky Friday this evening, Carolyn had a car full as she ended up taking all their friends from down the road as well.
After Carolyn brought the kids back from freaky Friday and we’d put them to bed, we watched The Lost Boys, one of Carolyns favourites from her youth.
Apparently The Lost Boys is the only film Carolyn has paid to see twice at the cinema, Ian thought it was OK as far as vampire movies go, vaguely amusing if a bit weird, Carolyn still thought it was great and sat there giggling like a schoolgirl most of the way through it.

El Gringo's

Friday 22nd May 2009
The kids had a Free Dress Day today, so that cost us a few bob, the money this time is to raise funds for a school missionary trip to Russia so they also had Russian food at lunchtime, that is to say it was the West Australian version of Russian food, they all seemed to like it.
There was still plenty of wind around today although not quite as much rain which was good, the shopping centre had a few more leaks today but they were small and didn’t affect us.
The funny thing about the leaks today was, they were coming out of the Air Conditioning Ducts, quite ironic really after yesterday. They were only minor and would probably stop when the wind changed direction, so they didn’t get rung through to the centre management.
It was a busy lunch time today, we had a new part time girl start today to cover lunch and late afternoons so she got a busy start, the rest of the day was pretty quiet really.
In the evening the kids went to Freaky Friday and we went to the local Mexican Restaurant, it has taken us over a year to get round to going there because it looks really naff and whoever drew up their take away menu needs shooting, writing about Bum Burners in a menu would not, we envisage, be found to be an attraction to most punters.
With nervous anticipation we entered ”El Gringo’s”, the décor leaves a bit to be desired, the menu is short and sweet and the waitresses are very loud and not very good at pronouncing Mexican dishes in a Mexican accent, but they are very good at doing it in a West Australian accent, so that’s alright.
The food was very good, Ian had Fajitas (Fah Hee Tars), they were tasty but needed just an extra couple of chicken strips to satisfactorily fill the last Tortilla.
Carolyn had an Enchilada, a Tortilla wrapped round whatever filling you choose, covered with Cheese and Salsa and baked in the oven, it was served with Rice and Frijole (mashed up kidney beans), the Frijole was probably the worst part of the meal but is obviously Busseltons version of Re-Fried Beans.
We would recommend it, but nobody asked us about it, we will however be going back there again and the kids have announced that they want to go to, maybe next time someone poos in the pool.

Busselton Catnappers

Friday 15th May 2009
It was a busy day at the Café today, made even busier by a phone call from the local Ranger, informing us that he had our cat Sterling locked up in his pound.
The Ranger was only going to be at the pound for a short while, so Carolyn had to go home, pick up a cat box, go to the Shire Offices pay a huge fee and then drive to the pound to get the cat.
It turned out that the Ranger had picked up the cat last Saturday but didn’t have a Chip scanner on him, so left it until today to get the scanner in order to find out who the owner is,
If the Ranger hadn’t been able to get hold of us today, the cat would have been taken to the local vet tomorrow to be put down, now how unfair is that, we had been waiting nearly a week to find out what had happened to the cat and all the time the Ranger had him locked up but couldn’t be bothered to get off his arse and scan it for a chip.
Carolyn asked the Ranger where he found the cat, he said that he had picked it up from somebody’s garden, not too far from us, it had been caught in a Cat Trap.
The reason our cat had been caught in this trap was because they put food in it to entice it in, we are furious and are trying to find out where the trap was, needless to say the Ranger wouldn’t tell us.
If there is anyone out there who knows a friendly Australian lawyer who could give us some advice on this we would be most grateful.
Apparently the Shire of Busselton hands out Cat Traps to anyone who asks for one, the people who ask for them, Bait them up, catch a Cat, the Ranger picks it up and the owner has to fork out just under Two Hundred Dollars to get it back.
Now if somebody had prize Ducks or Pigeons and a Cat was coming along on a regular basis and eating the stock, we could understand the reason for having traps, the same as you would for Foxes etc, but there is nowhere round here that has that problem as far as we know.
The Cat got Trapped last Saturday and the Ranger picked him up the same day, the kids have been distraught all week because they didn’t know where he was and the Ranger made no effort to find the owner. We were hoping that the freedom of information act would enable us to find out where the trap is so that we can do our best to stop the cat from heading in that direction, as it is he is a scrounger, all the neighbours feed him and he does the rounds getting bits of food as he goes. When this person baited a trap, he would naturally assume that the food was for him.
The people who baited this trap did so to lure him into their garden, he may never have been there before and would possibly have never gone there if they had not baited it to entice him.
Ian reckons there must be a law about enticing a persons livestock off of its land, thereby denying use of said livestock from the owner, anywhere else it would be called stealing.
These people deliberately denied us of our cat for six days, keeping him trapped and caged in a way that he was not used to, they are thieves and should be accountable for their actions. We aren’t going to mention how happy Carolyn was, after paying the fee for releasing the cat from Prison, after collecting the cat from the pound, to then be given a fine for letting the escape artist do his act.
Fraser received an award in school assembly today for his results in his science test, he worked so hard and for so long on it he deserved it.
Because it was so busy during the day at the Café and Carolyn was called away, Ian didn’t get round to doing a lot of his work until the end of the day. He ended up making Chicken and Mushroom Pie Filling until 8pm, with Carolyn coming in to help between 6pm and 7.30pm while the kids were at Freaky Friday, where apparently the water was pristine tonight, or was that pissed in, I can’t remember, it’s been a long day.

Just when you thought it was safe in the Water, Again

Friday 8th May 2009
It was fairly quiet again today at the Café, we had one member of staff call in sick this morning so that did us a favour, otherwise it would have been one extra person getting paid for not doing a lot.
Freaky Friday was abandoned again tonight due to contamination in the pool, this is the second week on the trot that this has happened
We can only assume that they have changed the pool timetable and have now scheduled in a Swimming for the incontinent class on a Friday afternoon, whatever it is we are hoping they sort it out soon.
Instead of Freaky Friday, the kids and Carolyn watched a film called The Waterhorse which they obviously found quite entertaining by the noise coming from the family room, Ian decided to work instead.
