Sunday 1st November 2009
We went to the market down at the foreshore this morning, there were quite a lot of people about but we didn’t find anything of interest so we drove to Bunbury, to have a look round up there.
We drove straight to the waterfront at Bunbury and found a small market that we hadn’t realised existed, again there wasn’t much that interested us, apart from a pie stall, it was manned by a lady of African decent and she offered us a taster of a few pies, they were great especially the Goat pie and if we had got a cool box in the car we would have brought a few home, as it was we weren’t hungry enough to eat one then and we didn’t have a cool box in the car, so we didn’t get any, but we’ll be ready next time.
Whilst in Bunbury we managed to find Marisa some cheap boardies (shorts) that will do her through the summer, for a girl she’s not that bad to buy shorts and trousers for, she is so small and skinny that they last for years, the shorts she was wearing today were for age 7-8 and they were only just starting to get tight.
On the way back we stopped off at the Farmers Market and loaded up with fruit for the week, we were hoping to grab some bunny Veg as well but there must have been someone just in front of us that had emptied all the bins.
When we got home we took the puppies for a walk along the beach, we had intended to go for a coffee at the beach shack, but as the warm weather is here and there are plenty of people wandering around, they have closed it for refurbishing and we haven’t got a clue when or if it will be reopening, so we had a coffee at Broadwater Bar and Grill (stilts).
After coffee we walked home and watched Escape to Witch Mountain with the kids, quite a good film and ideal for the kids.
There and back again..... a Hojos' tale. Boscastle Life and Times. We emigrated to Australia, had 3 1/2 fab years there and decided to come back to the UK again. Here we are blogging from sunny Cornwall.

Aching Backs and Legs
Sunday 11th October 2009
We slept like logs last night and woke up at a reasonable hour, at least all the men did, Carolyn and Marisa were not quite so keen to get out of the pit bit did eventually.
We managed to get out of the house at about 10.15am and popped into the café for a couple of minutes to drop some stuff off, before heading for the market in the hunt for bunny Veg.
There were loads of people at the market this morning but hardly any stalls, presumably there were more earlier but the wind was freezing, absolutely bitter, coming straight from the south pole and with loads of rain last night making the ground very damp under foot, it was not very nice to say the least.
From the market we drove round a couple of garage sales before heading home, we did manage to find a Badminton set for the kids for a couple of dollars, but as per usual the rest was junk and if there had been any good stuff to start off with, it was long gone by the time we got there.
When we got home we decided to tackle the garden, it has to be dug over and if we hadn’t done it today it would have been just putting off the inevitable.
We had about 25m x 2m to turn over, removing the weeds and the buffalo grass that had taken over our flower beds since last year when they looked so pristine.
We started digging at about 12 noon and finished at 5pm, it was seriously hard work and there were times when we were seriously tempted to stop and come back to it another day, but we finished it, absolutely knackered but we finished it and won’t be letting it get that bad next winter, honest.
The kids did their part to help us clear the weeds from the garden, they pulled the weeds up from the area that we cleared of weeds and bamboo last year, and they had almost finished by 5pm and will only need another hour or so to be finished.
We cooked up a load of weird and wonderful flavour sausages on the Barbie this evening and had them with salad before settling down to watch a film with the kids.
We watched China Syndrome with Jane Fonda and Jack Lemmon, it is one of the films that Ian enjoyed in his youth, it is still a good film but not enough action sequences to keep the kids interested.
By 9pm we had taken our knackered and aching backs and legs to bed, in an effort to give them enough rest so that we are fit enough to work tomorrow.

Stirling Ranges
Monday 28th September 2009
The puppies woke us up early this morning, now that is a really good reason to have daylight saving, if we gave all the residents of WA a puppy which woke the house up at dawn, they’d soon vote daylight saving back in so that we could have dawn a bit later.
Today is a public holiday but we had to get up early anyway, Fraser and Marisa are going on Scout Camp to the Stirling Ranges and we had to drop them off at the Scout hut at 9.30am, they still hadn’t left by 10am so we left them to it and went to pick up one of Kristians mates who we have arranged for him to see for the day.
When we got home we got stuck into some gardening, we have been putting it off all winter, too cold, too windy, too rainy, can’t be bothered, we now we have to be bothered because the grass is getting so long we aren’t sure if our next door neighbours still have a garden fence and if they haven’t we don’t want the puppies to escape.
We did a fair amount of heavy digging but soon got fed up with that, so we went down to the jetty for a coffee while Kristian and his mate hurtled around on their scooters.
After dropping Kristians mate home we went to the Café to do a few bits there before going home and having pizza in front of the telly while watching Spiderman with Kristian.

What’s a Fried Potato Like?
Saturday 26th September 2009
Saturday, Ians favourite day, Not. And today was not going to let him down.
Firstly the Ice Cream machine packs up, it always seems to pack up on a Saturday when you can’t ring the manufacturers for advice on how to fix the problem, it normally coincides with the holiday period as well and guess what? Yep you got it, the school holidays started today, so with any luck we might get it repaired by the time they go back to school, just in time for us not to need it as much.
It’s AFL Final day today, after weeks of Finals leading up to last weeks Preliminary Final, we now have the Final and it is between St Kilda who are unbeaten all season and Geelong who lost in the Final last year.
The shopping centre was busy this morning, but we were really quiet, because the game starts at 12noon over here, everyone goes out and does their shopping early before rushing home to fire up the Barbie and get drunk, hence they don’t stop in Cafes on Final day.
Ian did however get a little bit of a giggle out of the staff this morning, also you can now put a name to the comment because when Ian told them that he was going to blog what they had said, they insisted on being named, so here goes.
It was Kates turn first, Kate does most of the hard graft on a Saturday and tends to be able to keep the rest of the kitchen staff moving.
We needed some potatoes peeled this morning so that we could make up a pot of mash, Ian asked Kate to do it which she did, then just as she was about to finish peeling, she held a potato up in front of her face, looked at it and said I wonder what a potato would be like if you put it in the fryer, Ian looked at her incredulously, at least he thinks that’s the word you would use to describe the look, and said “a Chip”, she sort of blushed a bit and said “oh yeh”.
We wouldn’t mind, but the bulk of her waitressing involves chips and she hadn’t realised that they were made from potatoes.
The second quote of the day came from Rachel, when Ian was telling the girls about Kristian and his friend getting awards for their NAPLAN results,
Rachel said “I was in that assembly, they were for the people in the top 20% weren’t they?”
Ian said “yes that’s right”
Rachel said” when they were giving them out I said to my friend, I bet we’re in the other half”.
Ian laughed, obviously they took the maths results into account when checking Rachels results.
Later on when Carolyn came into the Café, Ian told her about Rachels little faux par and Rachel still couldn’t understand why it was funny, so Carolyn tried to explain to her that if only 20% got the award, then there was a lot more than half left, there for she couldn’t possibly be in the half that didn’t get the award.
Rachel then took a different tack and said that what she actually meant was that half of her class got the award, she expected that she would not receive an award, so she would be in the other half of her class.
Ian thinks she’s talking tosh.
Because it was so quiet in the Café today, we were able to have a bit of a laugh at their expense, but normally this dippy attitude goes on when we’re busy which is why Ian gets so stressed out on a Saturday.
Because it was so quiet we closed the Café early, when Ian got home he thought he might like to watch the AFL Final or what was left of it, but the kids were watching Matrix so he started listening to it on the radio.
As it approached the final quarter, Ian got Marisa to put the film on Frasers computer so that he could watch the game, unfortunately we don’t have terrestrial TV down here and Foxtel show it about four hours after it is finished, so Marisa put her film back on.
Ian did go online to try and find out the result and there were hints that Geelong might have won, but the official AFL site wouldn’t let him get past the score at half time, so he lost interest.
This evening we took Fraser and his mate out for dinner at the Chinese before going to the cinema to watch G-Force, it was the final part of Frasers birthday celebrations so we let Fraser and his mate sit at the back squealing like stuck pigs every time something funny happened, while we sat a few rows in front pretending not to know them.
It was a good evening and Fraser really enjoyed himself.

Pooing and Weeing.. I can't believe we have stooped to titles like this!
Sunday 20th September 2009
We woke up at a reasonable hour this morning and went for breakfast in Dunsborough, it was just another part of Carolyns birthday celebrations, she does like to make it last as long as possible.
After breakfast we went for a walk round town and down to the waterfront, it was very windy and raining quite a bit but we seemed to be under cover whenever the rain came.
We couldn’t stay out all day because the puppies needed feeding and pooing and weeing and cleaning up after, but we did stop for an ice cream at Simmo’s before heading home.
It was cold, windy and rainy all afternoon, so after cleaning out the rabbits, dogs and cat, we sat and watched the film Storm Seekers with Darryl Hannah, she didn’t half look rough in it, her face looked all bloated like that of an alcoholic and it wasn’t the best bit of acting we’d ever seen, but that probably explains why we had never heard of it before.
The kids said that they enjoyed it, but we suspect that it was the fact that they were allowed to eat yesterday’s leftover pizza in front of the telly that really impressed them.
In the evening after the kids had gone to bed, we watched episodes of Life on Mars and Torchwood, we don’t know if we are just watching a bad batch of Torchwood episodes or whether they are normally like this, but the acting, storylines and script are so naff that it has almost become an addiction, watching them to see how bad they can really get.

English Jelly Babies
Saturday 19th September 2009
Carolyns birthday and she had to work, she didn’t have to work until 10am mind and she finished at 1pm, so it wasn’t so hard really.
Fliss and Lukery her lover took the kids to the cinema this morning, they went to see the film UP, we reckon Lukery loves these cartoon films but is a bit too macho to go on his own and Fliss is just a big kid herself, so when a film like this comes along taking the kids is the perfect alibi.
Ian was hoping to finish work early today, but with staff dragging their heels as usual it was 4pm by the time he finished everything he had to do.
After work, Ian went shopping for some English Jelly Babies and rabbit scraps at IGA supermarket, Australian Jelly Babies are disgusting, the person who makes the Australian version has obviously never tasted the far superior English version, or maybe he doesn’t really care what they taste like because if they are only eaten by Australians the chances are they will be covered in tomato sauce anyway, so it doesn’t matter what they taste like because they will all be tomato sauce flavour by the time the get eaten.
When Ian got home, Carolyn opened her cards and presents and seemed to like them all, so that was a result.
We went out for dinner at the Vasse tonight, the boys were determined to have a Pizza each despite the fact that we told them they were big, they managed to finish the equivalent of one whole pizza between them, so guess what they’ve got for dinner tomorrow.
Carolyn had a steak with mushrooms stuffed with snails, we haven’t eaten snails since we were back in the UK, so she was in her element and thoroughly enjoyed the meal, she reckons it was the best meal she had eaten in Busselton and let the chef know it.
After dinner we walked up to the Royal Palms (Ship) for a quick drink before catching a taxi home, the floor in the bar was once again filthy and sticky as they had a crowd in to watch the AFL (aerial ping pong) this afternoon and none of the staff could be arsed to mop the floor afterwards despite it being the main bar for a wedding reception in the evening, the management should be ashamed of themselves.
After we got home, Ian watched the real football, Arsenal v Wigan, a mismatch if ever there was one, while Carolyn played on the computer.
The dogs still haven’t got a name although we did sit up last night firing names at each other, Hinge and Bracket, Smith and Jones, Samson (sammy) and Delilah, Anthony (Antoinette) and Cleopatra, George (Georgia) and Mildred and many more, they are Carolyns babies so she is going to have the final decision at some point, the rest of us will just have to wait in nervous anticipation.

Flying Tables
Thursday 10th September 2009
We were woken at 4am this morning by the wind and rain, we have had and still got a severe weather warning in place at the moment, when Ian went to work at 7am the rain was horizontal and plenty of it.
We were really quiet at the Café this morning, we had expected to be busy as the weather was so bad, it normally works out like that.
Then at about 11.30am the Café was mobbed, hardly a seat left in the building, and it carried on like that for about two hours which helped towards making up for the rest of the week, although it did get a bit stressful at times.
During this couple of hours the weather outside was horrible and just as we were at our busiest, a young girl came to the counter and suggested to Ian that he might want to dismantle the large umbrella that we have outside to shelter those who need to eat and drink outside (smokers) even during inclement weather, as it was trying to take off.
Ian knew it was a risk putting the umbrella up this morning, so he made a point of bolting it firmly into its base and tied the canopy part to a pole on one side and a hook in the wall on another, this had worked quite well all morning.
When the girl came in to say that the umbrella was about to take off she wasn’t lying, when Ian got out there, there were three girls holding the table to the ground, the wind had got under the umbrella, picked it up with the base still attached, the base couldn’t pass through the hole in the table, so it picked the table up and would have quite happily taken the umbrella, base and table for a spin round Busselton if it hadn’t been for these girls holding it down and a trellis type construction overhead that stopped it being whisked away before the girls could do anything.
Tonight after the kids went to bed, we watched a film called Running Scared with Gregory Hines and Billy Crystal, it was a bit dated but good fun none the less.

Bram Stokers Dracula
Saturday 22nd August 2009
It was a busy day at the Café again today, the staff were a bit better than they have been over the last couple of weeks but Ian still finished later than he had hoped and more stressed than is good for him.
Fraser and Marisa went on another Scout camp tonight, they’re calling it a camp but it is actually a night in the Scout hut as a farewell to one of the other Scouts, unfortunately they wouldn’t take Kristian as well so we didn’t get a chance to go out on the town.
After Kristian went to bed we watched Bram Stokers Dracula, we now know why they always call it Bram Stokers Dracula, nobody else in their right mind would want their name linked to it.
This film was so bad that despite the fact that and there was copious amounts of breast being flashed across the screen on regular occasions, Ian couldn’t stop thinking that cricket would probably be more entertaining and he hates cricket, although England have got the aussies under the cosh at the moment so the prospect of rubbing a few aussies noses in it could make it worth watching.

Blowing Her Hooter
Wednesday 19th August 2009
Carolyn is feeling sorry for herself again, she has got another of those snotty colds that she seems to have every other week, if she’s not careful she’ll have to start planting trees to compensate for all the rainforests she’s wiping out blowing her hooter.
The Café was fairly quiet today, probably just as well considering we are still one member of staff short, we have got our one staff member back who had to visit an ill parent a couple of weeks ago so that took a bit of pressure off, it’s good to have people who know what they’re doing.
After the kids went to bed we watched a great film, Notting Hill with Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts, bit of a chick flick, but funny and easy to watch with a happy ending, what more can you ask for out of a film when you are trying to chill out after work.

Little Old Lady

Marisa was in the spotlight at school again today, she played the part of an old lady in a play about knowing who your friends are and knowing how to treat them.
Her portrayal of the old lady got rave reviews around the school; Ian reckons she has been studying her mums’ characteristics and used them to make it look realistic. Carolyn reckons Ian will get a smack in the mouth when he gets home from work.
Fraser and Marisa went to Scouts this evening, Carolyn went along half way through because there was supposed to be a committee meeting, only to find that the meeting had been cancelled and it hadn’t occurred to anyone to let her or another mum know, she was not happy, but we still don’t know which one she was. We later found out that the other mum had only been asked that day to take over Secretary duties for the evening, nice.
After the kids went to bed we watched the Clint Eastwood film, High Plains Drifter, it was one that Ian had watched years ago and it seemed so good at the time, it didn’t seem quite so good this time. You can tell Ian has been saving films on the Foxtel thingybob, they have all been fairly dire, proving that tv is a waste of time, snicker.

Apocalypse Now
Monday 17th August 2009
Aden was off work with a cold today, so needless to say we were busy, in fact it’s amazing how when we are short staffed and busy, we always manage to cope very well.
We reckon that in times of adversity, everyone goes onto autopilot and gets on with whatever needs doing and worries about it afterwards, if it wasn’t for the stress involved we’d be tempted to run short staffed permanently.
Kristian was going to go to Cubs tonight but he would have been the only one there, so they cancelled it which pleased him no end, because he got the chance to play his new computer games instead.
After the kids had gone to bed we watched the Francis Ford Coppola Apocalypse Now, Ian remembers all the hype at the time it went to the cinema many years ago and thought it would be a good idea to see it and find out what all the hype was about all those years ago.
It was different, Ian thought it was ok but Carolyn, who would have rather watched Whoops Apocalypse slept through most of it, it was however, way too long and we ended up going to bed later than normal which no doubt we will feel tomorrow.

Dossing In Front Of The Telly
Saturday 15th August 2009
It was a busy day at the Café today, it was so busy that when Carolyn came in to drop some shopping off she ended up staying and working until we closed.
We spent the evening just dossing in front of the telly, watching films with the kids. I expect we fed them, in case you were worried.

Bad Boys II
Monday 10th August 2009
It was a fairly quiet day at the Café today, which was fortunate because our new new girl Jesse started today and while she has done counter work she has not done the kitchen and waiting bit as well, so it gave us time to show her what’s what.
Kristians Cubs meeting was called off again tonight, the Cub leader couldn’t make it because of work commitments and there was no one else to take over, he didn’t care too much because it gave him more time to play his computer games.
After the kids had gone to bed we watched Bad Boys II with Will Smith and that same someone Lawrence whose name we can’t remember, it was good for a laugh but we reckon it probably didn’t do that well at the Oscars.

Even More Baby Bunnies
Sunday 9th August 2009
We moved the rabbits around today, the two girl bunnies who had been living in the large rabbit run while mummy bunny looks after her new babies started making funny noises, similar to those of their mother when she was about to give birth.
We had just swapped them over into daddy bunny’s hutch and were ready to go out, when Marisa noticed that there were two baby bunnies in the girls new hutch, we don’t know which one is mummy though.
The kids were invited to Marisas friend who is a boys house for the day, they had a great time and were treated to McDonalds if you could call that a treat.
We went to the market, had a sausage sizzle and very nearly bought a Blue Heeler (Aussie Dog), but resisted temptation.
After the market we went down to the foreshore for a coffee before going home to swap the boys beds over, Fraser is too big for his one and Kristian is big enough to want Frasers bed, so they agreed to swap.
In the evening we watched the film Bad Boys with Will Smith and someone Lawrence whose name we can’t remember, it was quite good fun to watch while tucking into a plate of Chinese.

The Three Musketeers
Saturday 8th August 2009
It was fairly busy at the Café today and most of our Saturday staff had their dippy heads on, bearing in mind that most of them have been with us for about a year, you would think that making a coffee or doing a bit of cleaning would be something that they would be comfortable with by now.
We were late leaving work today as it was one of those days when every bit of machinery needed cleaning, and there’s only one way of making sure it gets done properly, do it yourself.
In the evening we had a family film on, The Three Musketeers with Oliver Reed and a few others whose names we can’t remember, the kids thought it was good and are looking forward to watching The Four Musketeers.

Cape Fear
Thursday 6th August 2009
Our new girl Kiara started work today, she hasn’t made coffee before so needs training on that, but everything else, tell her once and it’s remembered, hopefully she likes the job.
This evening we watched the film Cape Fear that Ian had recorded, we thought that it was a fairly modern film, but this version of it wasn’t, it was one of those psycho type horror films and it was quite good, but not one for the kids, we didn’t think they did woman beating and rape all those years ago, it definitely wouldn’t have been allowed on telly back then.

SWAT
Wednesday 5th August 2009
Carolyn spent the morning getting Marisas rip-stick repaired and foraging in assorted bins for bunny food, mummy bunny is eating like a horse at the moment.
Kristian should have had a dentist appointment this morning but the dentist called in sick, probably sick of looking in kids mouths wondering how many of them have swine flu.
Ian interviewed a girl for the vacancy at the Café today, she has just moved down here from Perth with her family and used to work in a fish shop / take away, we checked out her references and she is starting tomorrow.
This evening after the kids had gone to bed, we watched the film SWAT starring Samuel L Jackson and a couple of other stars whose names we can’t remember.
It has been so long since we watched this one that we couldn’t remember most of it which was good, or maybe we were just drunk last time, which isn’t so good, we enjoyed it anyway.

The Quick and the Dead
Monday 20th July 2009
All is pretty average really, the Café is ticking over but with some busy bits in the middle of the day, which Carolyn comes in to help out with.
The kids are pretty much over the school holidays, having holidays in the middle of winter without a Christmas fitted in there somewhere and nothing much to do in the crap weather is not what it might be cracked up to be.
In the evening after the kids had gone to bed we watched The Quick and the Dead, a western with lots of famous people in it including Sharon Stone as the only female gunslinger in town, who just happens to have the hump with Gene Hackman, who just happened to have something to do with the death of her father.
It wasn’t a bad film, with a predictable ending, but with Sharon Stone keeping most of her clothes on for most of the time which was a novelty.

The Half Blood Prince
Sunday 19th July 2009
We went to the market down by the foreshore this morning, the weather wasn’t up to much so it was a case of grab what we needed and go.
We took the kids to see the new Harry Potter film this morning, The half Blood Prince, it was ok, Carolyn has read the books and can relate to it being a bit of a witch, but for Ian it was just a fairly good film with loads of special effects, the kids enjoyed it.
After the film we went home for lunch and then the kids went down the park to play, they came back a couple of hours later when they couldn’t take the rain and cold any more.

Bright Red Sticky Liquid
Saturday 18th July 2009
The Café was dead as a Dodo today and we had loads of staff in, amazing how much cleaning you can find for people to do really, if you try.
We were so quiet that we closed the café doors at 1.30pm and looked on course to be out of there by 2.30pm, which would have been a record.
Unfortunately, in his rush to get away Ian hadn’t put a rubber seal on the Slushie machine properly and when he filled it up with liquid the seal popped off and the liquid poured all over the place.
It’s amazing how far six litres of bright red sticky liquid can go, it was all over the machine and onto the worktop.
Having made a sticky mess of the worktop it then dripped onto the shelves below, this is when we find out that these super duper really useful deep shelves tilt very slightly towards the back of the unit, so guess where the bright red sticky stuff went?
You guessed it, we now have bright red sticky walls.
The liquid also managed to get onto the next shelf down, only this one didn’t tilt backwards, if anything it tilted forwards pouring the liquid onto the floor.
There was something strange about that shelf though, the shelf was stacked high with sleeves of milkshake cups all wrapped up in plastic bags and somehow the sticky red liquid managed to get onto every plastic bag protecting every sleeve of milkshake cups, even sleeves that were out of reach of the mess on the shelf.
The problem was we had to get it all cleaned up quickly before it started to dry, this involved taking everything off the shelves and taking it into the kitchen so that we had room to clean the shelves and the floor.
That bit we did without too much bother at all, it was after we had finished cleaning the shelves and were about to put everything back that we realised that all of these sticky sleeves had made a sticky mess everywhere they had touched a surface, so we then had to clean up the sleeves and the mess they had made.
By the time all that had been done and Ian had stripped down the Slushie machine and put it back together again, making sure that all the seals were firmly in position before filling it again with bright red sticky liquid, it was 4pm and Ian wasn’t a nice person to be near.
He had gone from having a bad day trade wise, to looking forward to finishing early for a change, to having to spend an extra hour and a half at work, stressed out because of a rubber seal.
Fraser was still not 100% today so Carolyn stayed at home with the kids, they appear to have spent the day perched in front of the telly watching the Pirates of the Caribbean films, one after the other.
We had a quiet evening and after the kids had gone to bed we watched a couple of episodes of the series that we are following, Torchwood and Life on Mars.
Torchwood wasn’t bad but we’re not yet totally convinced as to how good it is, Life on Mars is one of those series that we would have liked to watch when we were back in the UK but were too busy.
