Money, money, money

Tuesday 17th June 2008
The kids went off to school today with more money in their pockets to help good causes. This time it is for a Jaffle Pie for tomorrows lunch, for those of you who don’t know what a Jaffle Pie is, it is like a Breville toasted sandwich but uses Pastry instead.
Those of you that have read earlier rants by yours truly might remember a similar situation a little while back, although that was with Pizza.
It works like this, the kids pay for and eat a pie (Pizza last time), the school makes some money out of each one and the money raised goes to the school charity.
The charity in this case is sponsorship of a young girl in Africa, the money goes to improve her life through school, housing, FOOD etc. it seems ironic really that our kids have to eat Junk Food so that a young girl in Africa can have a healthy lifestyle.
While our kids are preparing themselves for obesity and heart disease by eating this junk food, this young girl is as fit as a flea and will probably wipe the floor with us in the 5000 metres in a couple of Olympics time. Our kids will probably be watching it on the box with a Pizza in one hand and a Jaffle in the other, with a slab of beer in the Eski (cool box) next to the armchair, and they’ll be able to say we helped her get there before nodding off after one can too many.
Don’t get me wrong, I think that the sponsorship is a great thing, but surely it would be better and more educational for the kids if they had to eat the equivalent of an African Childs meal for lunch rather than junk food.
The other money they went into school with is for them to enter a talent contest, Fraser is going to do magic tricks while Marisa is part of a dance troupe. We will let you know about that when it happens, whether you want us to or not.
