The Bamboo Curtain

Sunday 30th November 2008
Surf School today, so it was out early so that we could do the market run beforehand. The market was quite busy and we had spring rolls for breakfast as we walked round, there were a few more stalls than normal, a sign that the town is starting to get ready for Christmas.
All the kids did really well at Surf School today which was quite pleasing, we had the obligatory sausage sizzle and then went home to start work on the garden.
This afternoon the kids went round to a mates house down the road and we started work on clearing the ground at the side of the house, this is the same but of ground that Ian started clearing a couple of weeks ago before the heat got the better of him.
This time it was almost a joint effort, Ian slogged away at digging all the weeds and Bamboo while Carolyn would come and clear away all the debris in between doing the washing and other girlie things.
The person who said it would be a good idea and look lovely if you put Bamboo in your garden needs shooting, for those of you that don’t know, Bamboo grows in clusters, it feels great when you dig up a cluster hard work but rewarding as you lift it out of the ground. Then you find that you can’t lift it all the way out because there is still one root that is trailing off into the distance, you follow the root only to find that about a metre away there is another cluster of Bamboo which you dig up.
Then you find that you can’t lift it all the way out because there is still one root that is trailing off into the distance, you follow the root only to find that about a metre away there is another cluster of Bamboo which you dig up.

And so on and so forth until you find that you have the equivalent of a Daisy Chain draped around the garden, only it was 2 Metres High and Forty Metres long.
Needless to say it was a quite frustrating episode as far as gardening goes and by the time we had finished we felt good about how much we had done in an afternoon.
Carolyn went and got the kids and brought them back for tea and an early night, when they were all in bed we tucked into Pizza while watching a film.
If the Bamboo man ever darkens our doorstep again, we’ll show him where to plant it.

Bamboo also harbours snakes. Maybe I shouldn't have mentioned that but it is a good reason for getting rid of the stuff. It is a noxious weed in my book.
